The sailing handbook on your phone that answers your questions at sea
SeaSafe is an offline app for skippers bringing a newly bought boat home themselves. Ask what you see and what to do. The answer comes in seconds from 12 sailing textbooks and the COLREGs stored on the phone, with no signal and with the source shown.
- Works in airplane mode
- Source under every answer
- 27 emergency cards
- English, German, Russian
Free to install. The apps are in store review. Get one email when they go live.
Three things SeaSafe does for you on the passage
Tells you what you are looking at
Lights at night, buoys and marks, shapes and sound signals. Describe it in your words and get what it is and what it means for you.
"Yellow buoy with two black cones pointing up?"
Tells you what to do next
Who gives way, when to reef, how to cross a traffic separation scheme, what to check when the engine stops. With the rule it comes from.
"Ship on my right, crossing ahead. Who gives way?"
Walks you through an emergency
Person overboard, Mayday, fire, flooding and 23 more. One tap on the red bar, one step per screen, no typing and no model needed.
The Mayday card has the radio call written out.
All three serve one goal: get your boat to your home port under your own command, without a moment where nobody on board knows what to do.
Made for this situation
SeaSafe is built for one kind of trip. If three of these are true for you, it was made for you.
- You bought a boat and she is in another countryOften Sweden or Denmark, and the berth fee is running.
- You are bringing her home yourselfYou turned down a delivery skipper, because of the price or because you want to sail her yourself.
- You have the licence, but not the milesDay Skipper, SKS, ICC or similar, and no night passages yet.
- Nobody on board is more experienced than youThe crew are friends or family with the same background.
- The passage takes more than a day without a stopSo there are night watches and long stretches without signal.
- Your time window is fixedHoliday dates or the berth contract do not let you wait a week for better weather.
When to install it: as soon as the date to collect the boat is set. The handbook downloads over Wi-Fi at home; it cannot be done at sea.
What changes at sea, in numbers you can check
Compared with the textbook in the cabin, which is what most crews have when a question comes up.
| What matters to you | Textbook in the cabin | SeaSafe |
|---|---|---|
| Time from question to answer | Minutes: find the book, the index, the page, by headtorch | Seconds: type the question in your own words |
| Signal needed | None | None. The model runs on the phone, airplane mode is normal |
| Can you check the answer | Yes, it is the source | Yes. Book and section under every answer, one tap to the original text |
| Emergency procedure | Somewhere in chapter 12 | Under 1 second from any screen, works even if the model is not loaded |
| Languages | One | English, German, Russian, switch at any time |
| Cost | The book you own | Free for 3 questions a day. One payment for unlimited, no subscription |
How it works
Two steps happen at home, before you leave. The third is at sea.
Step 1 of 2
Loading the handbook
This phone has 8 GB of memory, so you get the larger model. One download, 2.6 GB, over Wi-Fi.
1.6 of 2.6 GB
- Language modeldownloading
- Handbook, 4,464 notesready
- Emergency cardsready
You can close the app. The download resumes where it stopped.
What crews use today, and where it breaks
Each option works somewhere. None of them works at 03:00, forty miles out, when you have the question.
| Option | What it costs | Where it breaks on a first passage |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery skipper | Often 20 to 50% of the price of an older boat | Expensive, and you are a passenger on your own boat |
| Experienced mentor on board | About €120 to €300 a day plus travel | Hard to find for your dates, and you still pay for every day |
| A friend on the phone | Free | Needs signal and a friend awake at night. Hard to ask twice |
| ChatGPT or a search engine | Free | Needs a network. Answers from general memory, not from a sailing textbook, with no source to check |
| The textbook | Already on board | Correct, but too slow to search on a moving deck in the dark |
| Windy, PredictWind | Free to about €50 a year | Gives weather data, not what to do with it |
What people worry about before installing
"It will not work without internet"
It is built for that. The model and the handbook are files on your phone. After the first download you can switch on airplane mode and everything works. We test it that way.
"The AI will tell me something wrong"
It can. That is why every answer shows the book and section it came from and is marked "not expert-reviewed". Read the source when it matters. The skipper decides, not the phone.
"I will panic and will not be able to type"
For emergencies there is no chat. The red bar opens a card in under a second, one step per screen, large text. It works even if the model is not loaded.
"My phone will not run it"
The app checks memory before downloading anything. About 6 GB of RAM gets the larger model, about 4 GB the smaller one. Below that it tells you straight away.
"Another subscription"
There is none. Install free, 3 questions a day free, emergency cards always free. Unlimited questions are one payment through the App Store or Google Play.
"My questions go to some server"
They stay on your phone. No account, no analytics, no ads. The only network traffic is the model download and, if you buy, the store purchase. See the privacy policy.
What SeaSafe is not
- Not a chartplotter or navigation aid: no chart, GPS track, AIS or routing.
- Not a weather service: it does not tell you whether to leave port.
- Not a distress device: in an emergency call on VHF channel 16 first. The card tells you what to say; it does not call anyone.
- Not a replacement for training or official publications.
At the end of the passage
Lines ashore in your home port. The boat arrived without a new repair bill, and you brought her yourself. On the way you looked up the right-of-way rules a dozen times, and by the last night you stopped needing to. SeaSafe does not sail the boat. It makes sure that when a question comes, you have the answer and the page it came from.
